In August 2001, a group of African and American professionals met in Lexington to discuss a strategy for helping Africa fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic.  At the time the global concern was that the greatest threat to Africa’s development and survival was HIV/AIDS. From that meeting emerged GlobeAfrica, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping all Africa fight diseases and poverty principally through technology.

The choice of technology as a medium for helping Africans deal with their multifaceted problems was made to achieve four main goals:

·         To give Africa’s young unemployed, orphans, street kids, etc., affordable access to information through the World Wide Web.

·         To train these underserved Africans in computer and information technology skills to prepare them for employment, poverty alleviation, and most importantly, long-term development.

·         To attract Africa's most vulnerable to a technology setting for life-skills training in general and HIV prevention education in particular.

·         To provide a forum for promoting grassroots involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

GlobeAfrica is registered in Tanzania and Ghana, with operational presence in Tanzania. Since 2004 GlobeAfrica has trained over 2,000 young Tanzanians in basic computer literacy, keyboarding, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Web development, Internet and E-mail, video clip development, graphics, computer networking, and T-shirt making.  We also offer English language training.

Certification

The purpose of the technology training is to prepare these otherwise marginalized youth for employment or to set up their own small-scale businesses either individually or in teams. The training leads to certification upon successful demonstration of proficiency through testing in a particular skill area. Currently, the most popular certifiable skill areas are keyboarding, Word, Excel and Access. This equips trainees to find employment as secretaries or to set up their own secretarial services businesses.

Life-skills Training

GlobeAfrica provides life-skills training through weekly group meetings which promote interactive communication. The goal is to effect character development and behavior modification, and to promote awareness and volition for avoiding HIV. GlobeAfrica operates through youth clubs to bring spiritual, physical and economic healing to vulnerable young Africans in collaboration with local non-profit organizations and Churches.

The MILLION-PERSON Campaign to Help Underserved Africans

The population groups we wish to serve in Africa are the poorest - orphans, street children, refugees from other countries, displaced peoples and the unemployed youth who are so vulnerable to diseases. They do not have the resources to help pay for local operating expenses, such as staff, equipment, utilities, etc. We are mounting this campaign to raise money to help blanket Africa with this valuable service. Please help.
